Platelet-rich plasma is a highly effective treatment for a large number of conditions, however, over the years and after thousands of injections I’ve learned quite a few things and how to ensure that my patients receive the result they are looking for out of their PRP injection. The most important aspect to understand is that your PRP injection is only as good as the platelets you can provide. This means that I can not make your platelets better or worse. Therefore much of the success of PRP is dictated by how healthy you are before your PRP treatment.

Dr. Ben’s Pre PRP protocol

This led me to create this protocol for all my PRP patients to undertake at least 2 weeks before their treatment. This has resulted in improved clinical outcomes; enhanced quality of life and ultimately less PRP injections required to decrease pain.

Below I’ve outlined my protocol for all patients scheduled for PRP injections for a minimum of 2 weeks before their treatment:

  1. Metagenics Ultra InflamX 2 scoops in 300 milliliters of water with 1 tbsp of MCT oil for breakfast and lunch. Additional snacks are ok if desired such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, berries or an apple with almond butter.
  2. Paleo based supper. Clean and healthy proteins served along lots of healthy vegetables, both cooked and raw, such as sweet potato, spaghetti squash, roasted cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, and broccoli, or a salad.
  3. Eliminate all sources of refined sugar and all grains and alcohol.
  4. Omega 3’s: 2000 mg of combined EPA/DHA fish oils taken daily with food.
  5. Adequate daily hydration. Your urine should be light yellow. If it’s clear you’re drinking too much. If it’s dark yellow, cloudy or has an odour you’re not drinking enough.
  6. 1 serving of Cytomatrix Joint Collagen Matrix in a smoothie or water daily.

Optional supplements if necessary:

  1. Curcumin to decrease acute inflammation.
  2. Digestive aids if the patient has had their gallbladder removed.

Modifying my patients’ nutrition decreases systemic inflammation levels which results in the specific joint to also decrease its inflammation. Less inflammation means less pain during and after the injection and reduced healing time. Decreased inflammation also means less swelling, increased well-being and improved overall health.

I hate the word diet, and use lifestyle as much as possible. A paleo based lifestyle is easy to understand and implement. It is not highly restrictive and also doesn’t require you to be on the wagon or off the wagon. Paleo eliminates refined sugar and all grains. That’s it! Everything else is good to go. It honestly is that simple.

Omega 3’s are excellent at decreasing triglycerides in the blood very quickly. Triglycerides are fats floating in the bloodstream. When you eat more food than what you require your body turns that extra fuel into triglycerides which can then be stored in fat cells and released at a later time when you need them. Reducing these triglycerides decreases the fat floating in the plasma and thus the PRP injection.

Hydration is vital to every cell in the body and makes up 92% of our blood. Therefore if you’re dehydrated your blood is thicker and instead of being the consistency of oil it maybe closer to a smoothie which means it is putting more stress on your blood vessels and your entire cardiovascular system. It’s not about how much water you’re drinking but how much water you need, and each one of our needs are different. I always tell patients to judge by the colour of their urine and adjust accordingly.
